Hello 🙂 here is my homework of this week. It’s the street in the small city named Galle, in the Southern part of Sri Lanka. While painting this picture, my understanding is that the Sun (source of light) comes from upper behind the building on the left. So, the shadow on the right building and the colour of the right building should be little lighter from the building on the left. I’m not sure if this is right.

Here is my homework. This is the remaining of the Yapahuwa Rock Fortress in the Old Kingdom of Sri Lanka (around the 13th Century). I took the reference photo at the Fortress last year. The place gave me the sense of strength, extravagance, and intimidation. To me, this Fortress evidences the architectural craftsmanship of people from the past, and it is the reminder for people at the present to never take anything for granted, as glorious moments could be brief and nothing lasted forever.
Whilst I was painting this piece, I was thinking of the words: ‘defend, protect and stand tall’. I also wanted to reflect the bold, dutiful and mysterious character of this place, although I doubted it if I achieved. The Fortress reminds me of ‘Heimdall the Gatekeeper’ in THOR.

During the COVID-19 Lockdown, I’ve taken up watercolour paint to unwind stresses, and it’s grown on me. I wish to continue painting and aspire to paint better.
I know Mr. Hillkurtz from Domestica online course and have started following his IG. I like his styles, and the way he uses perspectives and depth in his art pieces.
This is my very humble IG account: https://www.instagram.com/prissyploy_art/
Really looking forward to the class 🙂

Thank you Alex. Your constructive comments are much appreciated. I also share your view that my painting is rather flat. And I actually struggled to find the vanishing points while painting this piece.
With this, may I ask how do we find the vanishing point? My understanding is that, since the vanishing point is beyond the picture (outside the paper), I should estimate where it should be, mark it (off the paper) and then draw the lines in order to create the linear perspective sketch. Is it supposed to be done this way? But then how do we do that on a thumbnail sketch with a usually small sketch book? Am I to mark the vanish points in my mind? I hope my questions are clear and not to tedious. It’s been my third month in this watercolour painting journey 🙂 I’ll watch the class record again in case I miss the part where you’d already explained it.
Thank you
