    Hello Everyone,

We are starting this Sketchbook Thread to see what’s inside your sketchbook. Did you draw over the holidays? Do you write in your sketchbook? Let’s see what’s inside!

Hi Doug, Nice work. Do you draw people all the time on your commute? I was just admiring the work of Timothy Ho who goes by drawingonthesubway on Instagram. I’d be curious to get your thoughts on his work.

I started a new sketchbook, trying to draw every day. Currently focusing on drawing the torso. However, I like to practice portraits as well.

I particularly like the torso drawings. Where do you get your reference images from? I wonder also what is the difference when you are studying something like the torso as opposed to just enjoying something like portrait drawings.

I get most of the images from Pinterest. I have a collection of different images actually. But what’s nice about Pinterest, is if you click on one image, you’ll get similar images. It’s not shown here but I’ve studied forms and underlying bones and muscles. So I’m trying to make these sketches feel real and grounded just by using lines. So consciously deciding what details to include or leave out. Also what to exaggerate and not exaggerate. Also, cheekbones in 3/4 view just started making sense, so I am practicing that as well.

Also, I consider every time I draw a study. Sometimes are more fun than others. I take note of what went well and what needs improvement.

Well, that’s exactly what it takes to keep improving. You can always spot artists at the museums sketching and taking notes. That’s the way…Keep up the good work. Also, we will get our Pinterest page organized…soon 😁

Hi Layal, This is really great work. It reminds me that getting really good at anything is not a mystery. It just takes tons of work. Are you studying with @Will Weston or are these drawings from another source?

Not technically from a sketchbook but this is what I am working on right now.

Did you enter a fish drawing in the monthly drawing competition? Is this a subject you return to regularly?

I drew my friends and my wife over the Thanksgiving holiday here in the States. One friend put on a hat for me to draw and the other I drew while he was trying to fix his computer. My wife was watching a bad movie when I drew her.

These look great, especially the portrait of your wife. I’ve always wanted to try live drawing. How long did these take?

Hi Jaina, They take about 20 minutes give or take. The one of my wife perhaps a little longer, the one of the computer guy much less. When people move you wait a bit for them to hit the pose again so a lot if it is just waiting…
