Please note the location for this event
This event will not be held in our studios at the National Art Club. Participants will meet at Bethesda Terrace in Central Park.
On Saturday, June 8th, join Gavin Snider and Drawing New York for a live workshop in Central Park. We’ll paint the Bethesda Fountain from Bethesda Terrace, in person and in watercolor.
In this workshop, Gavin will show you his approach to a complex scene, layering a blank page with increasing levels of detail. We’ll capture landscape, architecture, sculpture, and people in motion.
We’ll discuss the things that make plein air painting come to life, negative space, perspective, light and shadow. More importantly, we’ll focus on the most fulfilling part of plein air painting, the ability to document an experience.
Recommended Materials:
- 2 round watercolor brushes. One large, size 10-12, for washes. One small, size 3-6, for detail. A fine tip is more important than brush size.
- 140 lb Cold press watercolor paper, roughly 11×14 in size. Gavin uses an Arches Watercolor Block. It’s great because it doesn’t need to be taped down.
- 2 water cups and a sketch board with holes to hold them.
- Travel stool (Unless you prefer to stand. There will be some seating available in this part of the park.)
- Watercolor tubes and travel palette, or watercolor pan set. Again, the color matters less than the technique.
