This is called an open picture format. There are no borders, so one can work endlessly without consideration of edges except where the wall ends.

Today, we will begin to discuss the picture plane. Around 1300, the concept of the picture plane (attributed to Giotto but no doubt advanced by many) began to take hold.

This will lead to a departure from the flat Byzantine work of the 1200s to the perspective-driven work of the Italian Renaissance.

This leads to the highly organized world of perspective and space in the High Renaissance.
