Landscape Painting - Capturing the Essence of What You See (Late Session)
In this session we will paint on location, capturing what we see as we explore picture-making components like color, shapes, and composition. These elements can be used as abstract underpinnings for representational painting and can help transcend a faithful representation of what you see to a work of art that can evoke an emotional response.
Attendees from the AM session can use their sketches, photos, and handouts in the execution of their painting (adjusting for changes in the time of day), the rest of the class will have access to the same handouts to guide them through the painting process.
3pm – 4pm
- Create studies to explore color and compositions.
Supplement these with photographs to capture the changing light of the scene - Consider different image components (from handouts) to help re-interpret our photographs
4pm – 6pm
- Paint on location with sketches and references on hand
William Low has been painting since his teen years, studying with Max Ginsberg and Irwin Greenberg. He has been using landscape and cityscape imagery and traditional techniques in his private commission work, children’s book illustrations, fine art painting, and public works projects. Low has a BFA from Parsons School of Design, MA from Syracuse University and he is a Professor at Fashion Institute of Technology NYC. His work has been displayed at the Heckscher Museum of Art NY, the Museum of F.I.T. NYC, the Museum of the City of New York, Maritime Gallery-Mystic Ct., and Arts Students League NYC. He has designed postage stamps for USPS and has multiple works in the collection of Rosewood Hotel Hong Kong. Low has created works for the MTA Arts & Design program which can be seen in the Bronx NY and Deer Park Long Island.
