Eileen Murphy: Plein Air Painting on a Dark Ground (Early Session)

$45.00

In this workshop, students will work to capture early-day light on a toned background so they don’t have to compete with the brightness of the canvas.

Finding the Light: Plein Air Painting on a Dark Ground

In this workshop, students will work to capture early light and late-day light while working on a dry dark ground. This allows the painter to focus on capturing the light accurately without having to compete with the stark white of the canvas; it also allows for simpler modeling since some of the shadow values will already be accounted for. My surfaces will be prepared with a layer of burnt umber, applied in advance so that it will be dry on the day if the workshop.
