This is a recorded version of Drawing for Composition, a 6-week class that I’ve taught in the US and in Europe. It gives students the object drawing skills needed to later excel at compositional techniques used by contemporary Illustrators, entertainment artists, and landscape artists. Students learn drawing methods that allow for differences in style, that cover a variety of objects and allow students to draw anything they may encounter in reference photography or out in the world.

This straightforward (recorded) course addresses hands and feet in-depth and in a short period of time. Hands and feet present a special problem to drawing students because they’re detailed, dimensional, mechanical, and also expressive, and rhythmic. In this class, we address hands in detail in the first lesson. We address the how-to aspects of drawing hands & feet, and their use as supportive-expressive elements to facial expression through slide presentations and demonstrations. Lesson two addresses feet and their role as expressive tools in figure drawing with examples pulled from multiple disciplines and in-class demonstrations. Two homework assignments are included in the class.

Shot live on location in NYC this two-hour session begins with strategies for drawing the figure and then moves right into student pads, with Mr. Weston drawing over their work and explaining as he goes. Assignments included.

This video was shot live during Will Weston’s New York City Figure Drawing Workshop in March 2024. It shows inside Will’s drawing pad for the entire four-hour lecture he gave over the course of two days. The quality of the video is good (not perfect). We feel it is extremely valuable for students to watch.

This drawing workshop uses old submarine interiors, steam cars, tanks, pre WW1 flying machines, and 19th-century dental and medical equipment as references allowing drawing students to portray character-filled man-made lab equipment, creepy lab furniture, and environments. Students learn to draw everything using cylinders (pipes & pipe fittings), balls, boxes, wire, and ropes, all exaggerated for clarity and expression. Students then scale and design a cutaway for a Mad Scientists laboratory allowing for staging and potential layouts.

AVAILABLE FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER AS A RECORDING! In this 6-lesson course, students will learn basic figure construction and then focus on line drawing, mechanics, gesture, and construction. Drawing techniques, how to draw volumetrically, as well as figure lighting, will also be covered. An assignment will be given in each lesson.
