The current exhibition of J.R.R. Tolkien’s work on view at The Morgan Library and Museum is a refreshing reminder that creativity can break the bounds of simple labels like painter or writer.

On view are Tolkien’s watercolors, maps, letters in Elvish (the language he created), hand-painted dust jackets, and his painting and drawing supplies. Even for those who don’t know his writings, this show is a must see.

There is also a stunning catalog that was created for this exhibition. This heavy book is filled with imagery and information that further expand our understanding of his work. We highly recommend this in addition to the exhibition.
