James McMullan: Lincoln Center Poster Artist
If you ride the subway in New York City in 2019, you will eventually see the poster for the revival of the play My Fair Lady at Lincoln Center. It is a wonderful watercolor depicting dozens of characters and gives a great feeling of the grandeur one might see on the Broadway stage.
As with all artwork, there is a real live human being behind its creation. With a little digging, we found this informative and well-made short film by Arts in the City, about James McMullan – Lincoln Center Theater’s Principal Poster Artist.
He has been designing posters for Lincoln Center for over 30 years and at 84 years old is still going strong and loving his work. Here is a book of 36 of the posters he designed for Lincoln Center. And here is the book he wrote about his childhood referenced in the film; Leaving China.

Thank you for sharing. What a wonderful, prolific illustrator. In this day of computer generated images, what a breath of fresh air to see hand painted poster illustration.
